Apple dumplings are a delicious treat! Here’s a classic recipe for you:
Apple Dumplings
Ingredients:
For the Dumplings:
- 2 large apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter (cold)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Syrup:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup butter
Instructions:
- Prepare the Apples:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Peel and core the apples, leaving the bottoms intact. You can cut a small slice off the bottom if needed to help them stand.
- Make the Dough:
- In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the sugar, milk, and vanilla until just combined.
- Wrap the Apples:
- Divide the dough into two portions. Roll out each portion into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Place one apple in the center of each dough circle. You can add a bit of sugar and cinnamon inside the apples if you like.
- Fold the dough around the apple and pinch to seal.
- Make the Syrup:
- In a saucepan, combine the water, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Bring to a boil and stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Bake:
- Place the wrapped apples in a greased baking dish. Pour the syrup over the dumplings.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Serve:
- Let them cool slightly before serving. These are wonderful with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!
